The first concert of the English Postcards Series takes place on Wednesday 19 May 2010 at Lighthouse, Poole with a programme that includes Tippett’s Fantasia on a Theme of Corelli; as well as Gerald Finzi’s Clarinet Concerto played by Kevin Banks. Finzi’s most widely performed and recorded orchestral work shows his particular empathy for this solo instrument, and takes as inspiration that other great English composer, Edward Elgar. The concert finishes with Vaughan Williams romantic Symphony No.5, with its pastoral themes and inspiring references to John Bunyan’s spiritual book Pilgrim’s Progress, itself a piece of great English writing.
