Rusty Revival!
Dvorak in a Day, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s project for local amateur musicians, returns to Bournemouth Pavilion. Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra has announced its third Bournemouth ‘Rusty Musicians’ project, which will take place at Bournemouth Pavilion on 22 January. The ‘Dvorak in a Day’ workshop gives amateur musicians of all abilities and ages the opportunity to spend a day alongside BSO professionals, training and performing.
Last year over 70 local amateur musicians took part, undertaking workshops in the morning before coming together in an amazing performance for family and friends in the afternoon. Each workshop is led by BSO musicians, who then play alongside their more ‘rusty’ counterparts. This year the music is Dvorak’s ‘New World’ symphony, including the famous Largo , better known as the theme from the 1980s Hovis advert, filmed on Shaftesbury’s Gold Hill!
‘It is an amazing and very popular event’ said Jacky Thorne of the BSO ‘Our rusty musicians tend to start the day feeling nervous, but this changes to elation and excitement as the day progresses. They are doing something that is very different from their daily lives, and while the day definitely challenges them both emotionally and musically, the final result is always fantastic.”
The BSO invites ‘rusty’ musicians of all ages across the town to dust the cobwebs from their instruments, and come and perform Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 alongside the professionals. The final concert will be conducted by Kevin Smith, the BSO’s own bass trombone player, and the focus of the day is to create a friendly warm atmosphere, it doesn’t matter if you can play every note, you just come to have fun.
Dvorak in a Day will take place on Sunday 22 January from 10.00am. The coaching from BSO musicians will be in the morning, with a larger rehearsal in the afternoon, finishing with an informal concert at 4pm for family and friends. The fee is £20 for adults and £10 for under 18s; to take part in this fantastic event, contact Linda Higson on 01202 644 707 or lhigson@bsorchestra.co.uk
