What inspired you to take up the double bass?
We were offered free violin lessons at school but when the only bass player left I thought I would have a go at that instead. My first double bass teacher was extremely enthusiastic and inspiring. I think the bass suits my personality better!

Have you always wanted to play in an orchestra?
My first ever record was Tubby the Tuba and I was completely fascinated by the idea of an orchestra. I also remember going to see a chamber orchestra perform at our local theatre on a school trip; I was hooked.

When did you join the BSO?
First time around in 1988 I stayed for 10 years. I left to get experience playing with other orchestras in London and at the same time I met my husband who lived near Southampton! Maybe I should have stayed in the BSO. I rejoined the orchestra in 2009 and I’m still enjoying it second time around.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love the audience’s reaction and I get a real buzz playing certain pieces of music. Playing for me is a great way to express all sorts of emotions.

What are the challenges of playing the double bass?
The biggest challenge is carrying it.

Name a musical personality living or dead you would most like to meet?
I’d love Jacques Loussier to teach me to play jazz piano properly.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time? What are your hobbies?
Sometimes I just need to run around so I really enjoy doing something active like running, swimming or sailing. I also love playing my piano to relax.

What do you like most about living on the South Coast?
I love being by the water, it gives a sense of freedom.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Playing Schoenberg’s Gurrelieder in the Philharmonie in Berlin with Abbado conducting (before I joined this orchestra) and also the Abba concerts with the BSO.

What would you do if you weren’t a musician?
Cry.
